Effect of S-methylmethionine as a protective compound on the metabolism of agricultural plants at low temperature

چکیده
The present research dealt primarily with a special protective mechanism which appears to be part of the defence responses of plants to low temperature. It was found that the metabolisation of S-methylmethionine (SMM) had a stimulatory effect on polyamine biosynthesis. The results proved that SMM acted via a special metabolic pathway to increase the quantities of certain polyamines (putrescine, agmatine, spermidine) known to be involved in the stabilisation of the cell environment, the macromolecules and the cell membranes. It was demonstrated that in wheat varieties, peas and maize, SMM treatment was able, to varying extents, to reduce low temperature-induced electrolyte leakage measured in terms of electrical conductivity. *Corresponding author. Effects of chilling and high light stress on phenolic metabolism and antioxidant activity of Aloe vera L. plants
High light (HL) can limit plant photosynthetic activity, growth and productivity. The HL effect was more pronounced in plants grown at low temperature. In order to determine the effects of chilling stress (4 0C) and light intensities (450 and 850 µmol m-2 s-1) on antioxidant defense system and phenolic metabolism of Aloe vera L., an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block desi...
متن کاملEffect of Temperature on Symptoms Expression and Viral RNA Accumulation in Groundnut Bud Necrosis Virus Infected Vigna unguiculata
Background: Groundnut bud necrosis virus (GBNV) (Tospovirus genus, Bunyaviridae family) infects the major crops of solanaceae, leguminosae and cucurbitaceae in India. Temperature is an important factor which influences the plant growth and development under diseased conditions. Objective: In the present study, we evaluated the effect of four different temp...
متن کاملIncreased phloem transport of S-methylmethionine positively affects sulfur and nitrogen metabolism and seed development in pea plants.
Seeds of grain legumes are important energy and food sources for humans and animals. However, the yield and quality of legume seeds are limited by the amount of sulfur (S) partitioned to the seeds. The amino acid S-methylmethionine (SMM), a methionine derivative, has been proposed to be an important long-distance transport form of reduced S, and we analyzed whether SMM phloem loading and source...

Background and objectives: The seed extract of Silybum marianum contains seven flavonolignans known collectively as silymarin. These metabolites can be produced in hairy root cultures of S. marianum. The effect of different physical factors can change root biomass and silymarin production which has been investigated in the present study. Methods<...
